Observing and Identifying Freshwater Protists

  • Author: Mary Blackmore
  • Activity Type: Ecology
  • Grade Range: 9 - 10 Introductory Biology

In this activity, students will observe a sample of fresh water from a stream or a pond that has been tested for water quality. They will identify and draw the different types of protists that they observe and predict water quality based on the types of protists in abundance. This activity is a good way to switch from discussing ecology to discussing organisms and cell structure.
