Acknowledgments
The CELS program gratefully acknowledges the
Exxon Education Foundation, the National Science
Foundation, and CELS member organizations for
generous financial support. The CELS advisors and
staff are indebted to the encouragement and trust
inherent in their support.
We thank Dr. Samuel Ward for supplying the
inspiration for the monograph frontispiece
through his presentation of the faculty-scholar
concept at the 1997 CELS Steering Committee
meeting. We thank Ms. Ellen Dudley, senior
graphic designer at the University of Wisconsin,
for the frontispiece illustration, which conveys
a complex message with little narrative. Mr.
Joseph Rossmeissl, editorial consultant, and Ms.
Julie Schroeder, graphic artist, at the
University of Wisconsin deserve our warmest
thanks for the expert care that they contributed
to each page of this monograph. We thank Mr.
Brian Gettler for his diligence in compiling the
extensive information in the appendices and Ms.
Jennifer Djupstrom for collecting the
photographs. Dr. Ching Kung contributed the wei
ji calligraph, and we applaud his scholarship
in more than the life sciences.
We thank the education committee chairs and
headquarters staff members of dozens of
professional societies who supplied information
for this monograph. We thank the photographers,
professional societies, and academic institutions
that have provided photographs and the
individuals who have given permission for their
use in our monograph. Throughout the development
of this monograph, we have been fortunate to work
with many people who have been gracious and
thoughtful in their suggestions. We hope that
this monograph will continue our conversations.
