SSI Home - Program Information

The Summer Science Institute (SSI) is a seven-week residential experience in which students gain an understanding of biological/physical research while learning about college life. Students also participate in classes, which strengthens their writing and math skills. More than five hundred students have benefited from this program since its inception in 1990.

During the summer students are paired up and work with a mentor on a specific research project that entails in-depth, hands-on research conducted by the students. Once the research has been completed, each group will write a research report and present their project and findings at our Research Symposium.

Aside from research, students will meet twice during the week to discuss topics of importance to the participants. In the past, these topics have ranged from scientific talks to what colleges look for when reviewing student applications.

There is no cost to SSI participants. Room, board, books and materials are provided by the program. Students who successfully complete the program may apply for one-half elective credit through the Madison Metropolitan School District.
