Undergraduate Research and Mentoring

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you have to be in a biological sciences major to apply for URM?
A: No. The URM Program is open to students majoring in any of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. These include chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics and/or biological sciences. However, preference will be given to students interested in interdisciplinary research related to the biological sciences.

Q: My Grade Point Average isn’t quite 2.8, can I still apply for URM?
A: Yes. We will consider promising students who’s GPA's are less than 2.8. Be sure to tell us WHY you are a 'promising' student in your essay and, if possible, make sure your recommendation letters indicate that this experience would be worthwhile for you and that you'll perform successfully.

Q: Do I need to have research experience to be in URM?
A: No. Some URM fellows will have previous research experience while others will be new to research. This mix of experienced and new undergraduate researchers is important for creating a great learning community.

Q: I'm thinking about a career in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine. Could I apply for the URM Program?
A: The URM Program is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in STEM research. While we have accepted students who've chosen to pursue both medical and research degrees, our resources are targeted for future researchers. If you haven't had the opportunity to experience STEM research, visit the CBE listing of Undergraduate Research Opportunites.
